Sometime in the wee hours of this morning, I remembered that we had some anniversary cards that were given to us to open on our anniversary (last Friday) that we had completely forgotten about, so we opened those over breakfast!
We could have been more organized today. Our rig is starting to feel a little small and when we sit for more than a day, it starts to get a little cluttered and we are due for a deep clean… You get the idea. We were supposed to move on today, but didn’t have a next place lined up, we also had the rental car until tonight and decided that we would figure out what we were doing this morning. Initially, we thought we would stay close to home and get organized, but then we realized we have this rental car, perhaps we should keep the RV here another night and take advantage of a rental car! Unfortunately, it was close to lunch time when we figured this out.
We packed a picnic and a couple of things and set out. We started off heading to Plymouth to see Plymouth Rock where the pilgrims landed. It is seriously nothing special, but it was cool to say we went. The other thing that is striking is all of the history in this part of the country and how far back things go. Not that I don’t ‘know’ this, but to see it is something else entirely. Growing up in California, everything I encountered growing up dates back to the gold rush, 1849. So, for us to drive through a town that was founded in 1620, when the pilgrims arrived, is hard to wrap my head around. When we were in Boston and they talk about Benjamin Franklin being born on this street and this is where Paul Revere road and here is where Benjamin Franklin’s parents are buried… I guess it is just a closer link to the past than I have experienced before.
We looked at the rock and then had our picnic nearby. After we ate, we headed out to Cape Cod! We sort of wanted to go all the way out, but the kids were being ever so delightful in our clown car and we decided that was too far to drive. We ended up in Sandwich (Est. 1637 (!)) and found an awesome beach! Back to not being organized, we did not have our swimsuits, we did not have our towels, we did not have any beach toys. Lesson learned. We walked out onto the beach and into that water and even John said it was perfect! I ALMOST just went right in, clothes and all, but then I thought about the gritty, sticky, sandy, salt-watery ride home and thought better of it. I told the kids it was their choice and they dove right in. I did get my pants wet above my knees. There was a little girl about Trista’s age and she started playing with Levi while Trista was with me. Then she came out and started playing with Trista and Levi kept calling for her to get her to come back. Levi dug and built sand castles and the girls collected 24 hermit crabs! Trista had never seen one before and was so scared to pick them up. By the end of our time there, she was petting one and gushing about how cute he was before releasing them all back into the water. When it was time for their friend to leave, she left a red bucket and a green sand castle mold with Levi and Trista and I promise we are going to hold onto those beach toys and not visit a single other beach without being fully prepared!
After a while, I had gone up to the beach to play with Levi. He moved on and I still sat there, just playing with the sand and enjoying being at the beach. John came over and said, “You look like a three-year-old in a sandbox!”
I asked, “What is that supposed to mean?!?!”
He said, “Not in a bad way, it’s sweet. You just look happy with everything around you!”
We finally decided it was time to head back and we made our way back to the RV. We had dinner and I walked the kids up to the park area and then back for showers and bed time. John is making the same adventure that he made to get the rental car to return it, which I am VERY thankful for, because this means that I don’t have to drive Romeo Victor back up all the way through Boston to and through the airport while he returns the rental car! While he has been gone, I have worked to restore order to the RV and we will move on to a new destination (and more new states) tomorrow!
