Adventuring

Re-Calculating!

I think anyone who has driven with a GPS providing directions knows exactly what that word sounds like!  Well, unfortunately, that is the theme of today.  The Carkeet Caravan has met it’s match in Hurricane Florence and we are smart enough to know when to admit defeat.  Up until today we were still holding out hope and waiting to see what happened and even still this morning.  However, when we saw ‘Storm of a Lifetime’ and learned that DC has already declared a state of emergency, we knew it was time to regroup.  Literally every place we are supposed to be over the next two weeks has declared a state of emergency.  The tricky part is that we still have a date in Orlando at the end of the month and we can’t just get out of the way of the hurricane, because that puts us in the way of the evacuees.  So, we are working on a plan to head west, way out of the way of this mess and then make our way back down to Florida.  Some of you expressed disappointment that we weren’t going to be able to see you on this trip and I hope you meant it, because we might be heading your way!!

Today we had to return our rental car by noon.  We also had 3 day’s worth of wet and nasty clothes that needed to be washed.  We got up this morning and grabbed our laundry and headed to the laundromat.  The one we found, was not in a very nice neighborhood and the machines were dirty and it was not looking so good.  We got all of our clothes and detergent and everything loaded before realizing that you had to have a special card to start the machines.  There was supposed to be an attendant on duty, but there wasn’t and another patron told us there never is.  He directed us to a brand new place a few blocks up.  He went on and on about, “It is so nice! They give you free drying with a wash and it is clean!  You need to go over there!  This place is terrible!”

This was the first place, at least their sign was funny!

We thanked him and then I said, “Hold on a second.  If it’s so great, why are you here?”

He said, “’Cuz I got a card for here and it’s got money on it!  As soon as the money is gone, I’m heading over there!”

We made our way over there and it was beautiful!  Tons of machines, big and squeaky clean.  They had big televisions in different areas playing different shows and he was correct, free drying with the purchase of a wash!  We got the clothes started and John ran out to grab some breakfast for the kids, the kids watched Nickelodeon and it was nice to get those clothes all washed up.

I took these pictures of my kids dancing at the laundromat.  This is a great illustration of where we are right now.  We are disappointed at our change of plans, we are extending our time here at the RV prison to get caught up with some things (school work, work work, bills, etc) and then we will continue!  We’re going to have fun and enjoy this time together, even if it means dancing at the laundromat!

  1. Bummer. But I know you’ll find something fun to do while waiting for Florence to finish her hissy fit! Kentucky and Tennessee are beautiful!

  2. Please stay safe and know that you’re more than welcome to evacuate to Miami (seems kind of weird to say that during hurricane season).

  3. You are not only wise to flee the Big F, but have great attitudes. Keep on dancing!!! I know you will make lemonade out of lemons, as they say. Love you all…
