Sacagawea

As part of our homeschool endeavor, we have been reading, ‘Who was Sacagawea?’. We have been traveling through parts of the Lewis and Clark expedition and it seemed fitting.

On Sunday, the kids got dressed for church and then decided to play Lewis and Clark (again), although this time Trista was Sacagawea (wearing a bonnet we bought in PA Amish country), Levi was Clark with his pop-gun and a satchel for food and supplies, and Annie’s beloved raccoon (dog toy made by Kong) was Pomp, Sacagawea’s baby boy whom she carried during her travels with Lewis and Clark. Either we have totally lost it or the kids are getting something out of all of this!

On Monday, we set out for our own grand expedition to Walmart in Riverton! We loaded up and headed into town to run various errands and stock up on some groceries and produce and we stopped at Sacagawea’s alleged gravesite on the way back. There is so much that is unknown about her life after her famous expedition. She was an amazing woman (from what we read) and a critical partner to Lewis and Clark on their journey.

On our way back up to the highway, we stopped at another cemetery and found the burial site of Chief Washakie. Chief Washakie was a prominent Shoshone leader in the 1800s and is buried in this cemetery, not too far from Sacagawea in a town called Fort Washakie!

It was very interesting to see these cemeteries and note some of the differences between these cemeteries and those that we are accustomed to seeing outside of the reservation.

As enjoyable as our day was, we had to stop for some water before we headed it home because it sure was a hot one!
